We are a nation and a world desperate for men and women of God to lead. Today you begin or continue that journey. As Joshua directed the people of Israel I also direct you, “Choose this day who you will serve.” As leaders in this modern world we can be tempted to follow the latest fad or chase after money, fame or power. Will you serve those idols or will you choose to serve the King of Kings and Lord of Lords?
Read Nehemiah chapter 10
The theme of chapter 10 is Obedience
Once we have repented of our rebellion it becomes easier but no less deliberate to begin to live in obedience to God.
As men of God, as women of the Risen Savior, it is our duty to be willing to do the small things in our efforts to serve God. I heard a story of a prominent, influential large church pastor who would walk into the church and if he saw any trash that had blown in he would stop to pick it up, even if he was talking with someone. Take on the small roles. Maybe nobody will ever notice, but remember that he who is faithful in small matters, will be given larger responsibilities.
- Clean the church
- Attend the church
- Visit the sick
I recently was visiting with a young man and we were discussing submission. When asked what he thought it meant he said, “Doing what I don’t want to do.” This might be true. But really what we are looking for is an acceptance that God knows best. He knows the results of our choices way beyond our wild imaginations. Trust in Him. Trust in Christ. Remember that He knows best. When you take on that attitude you will be more likely to want to do what is best for your own life. Following God is always ultimately a blessing. Even if it does not seem so at the moment, consider the Apostle Paul. He was shown all that he would suffer for the cross. Yet he obeyed anyway. That is amazing submission. That is the type of submission that we need to build up in ourselves if we are to be true spiritual leaders.
God has assigned you your role to play in the drama that began before creation and will continue for all eternity. Will you do your part? There are no small parts, only small actions. We each must live a life doing the next right thing. Do not neglect your sacred duty.
OVERVIEW OF LESSON 10
- Christianity is not a part of who you are. Take this seriously. Christ should lead your whole being.
- There is strength in accountability. Not in the “I need a babysitter” kind of way. But in an iron sharpening iron sort of way.
- Focus on YOUR God given mission and don’t worry about what God is doing with others.
- Trust in the Lord to meet your needs.
- Beware of seasons of neglect.
