We are a nation and a world desperate for men and women of God to lead. Today you begin or continue that journey. As Joshua directed the people of Israel I also direct you, “Choose this day who you will serve.” As leaders in this modern world we can be tempted to follow the latest fad or chase after money, fame or power. Will you serve those idols or will you choose to serve the King of Kings and Lord of Lords?
Read Nehemiah chapter 13
The theme of chapter 13 No Compromise with the World
If we learn nothing else from movies, we should know to never make a deal with the devil. He is very real, he cannot be trusted. He is the father of lies and he does not simply want to hurt you. He wants to destroy you and your legacy. Pay attention!
While most Christians won’t literally sign in blood on some contract as Hollywood would portray it, every time we compromise our faith and our love of Jesus we have made a deal with Satan.
Reading God’s Word should change us. If it does not than we are simply checking the box in our Scripture reading. We must learn to read it and expecting God to speak to us and impact the very core of our being. Listen to what is says to us. When he applauds someone is He speaking to you? When he condemns some nation or individual is He pointing the finger at you? Let His Word speak to You. If there is no response then, again, you are doing it wrong.
Note: Reading out of a sense of duty can NEVER do that.
- Read it
- Study it
- Mediate on it
- Memorize it
- Pick out a verse to center your whole life on.
- Ask God to use your time in His Word to light a fire within you.
When folks get their fire lit by God (as compared to charismatic people and motivational speakers) there is a long term impact and the Spiritual leader can hear from God! He will notice and start desiring to address community issues. The fire will not let him be silent. (Check out Jeremiah.)
- There are no cowards once they are filled with the Spirit of God.
- When the Spiritual Leader is filled with the Holy Spirit, he will feel led to deal with violations of God’s Word. He will not be able to turn a blind eye to sin.
It has been said that vision leaks and even our desire to serve God, our filling of the Holy Spirit is not a onetime event because over time He leaks out of us. We need to draw Him into us daily and constantly throughout the day.
When Nehemiah sees this compromise He rises. He has a very strong reaction to the sin. He sees the future of pain that ALWAYs comes in the wake of sin. As you read this passage think of Jesus cleansing the temple. Notice the pattern in both stories.
- Energy- Emotion
All of this is a call to REAL repentance. My noble brothers and sisters. The Spiritual Leader is called to address this natural slide away from the Kingdom of God.
