Quest for Holiness Part 55

Quest for Holiness coverslide

James 2:14-26New International Version (NIV)

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?  Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.  If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?  In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.   You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?   Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?   You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.  And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.   You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

Our quest for holiness cannot become so inwardly focused that we forget those around us actually have needs.  They need us to love them and care about their daily lives.  I remember a friend who would faithfully read his Bible ALL DAY LONG.  We had fantastic conversations about God and His faithfulness and He definitely knew God’s Word.  But he seldom left our dorm room.  He would skip classes to sit and read his Bible.  It was only on the rarest of occasions that he would interact with anyone.  Real life, a life of truth must be experienced.  It is in the daily world that serves as a crucible to develop and hone our faith.  It is God who puts us out in this corrupt world to help us forge our faith and our dedication to the King of Kings.  By the way why you are out being forged you also get to rub up against the lost and become a picture of where Truth can take you.  Every day His Word prepares be to be perfected and drawn to a more intimate walk with Him.  It is in life where His lessons come to bear fruit.

Get out of your comfort zone and touch this world for Christ.  The church has been silent for too long.
